We built the court finder we always wanted

About Local Basketball Courts

Finding a public basketball court shouldn’t be this hard. Google Maps returns parks that turned into soccer fields. Apps show YMCAs and private gyms that cost $30 a visit. The city’s parks department website hasn’t been updated since the Obama administration.

We built Local Basketball Courts to fix that — a straightforward directory of publicly accessible courts across the United States, with maps, directions, and the information that actually matters: surface type, lighting, indoor or outdoor, and whether there’s a fee.

No accounts. No paywalls. No fluff.

How the data works

Our court database is built on OpenStreetMap — a free, editable map of the world maintained by a global community of volunteers. Every basketball court tagged in OSM with verifiable coordinates is included in our directory. It’s the same underlying geographic data that powers hundreds of mapping applications worldwide.

We sync with OpenStreetMap monthly, which means new courts get added, removed courts get cleaned up, and surface and lighting data stays current. On top of that, real players can confirm a court still exists or flag one that’s been closed or removed — those community signals get layered on top of the base data to make listings more trustworthy over time.

What we cover

All 50 states. Over 16,000 cities. More than 93,000 courts — outdoor park courts, indoor recreation centers, school courts open to the public after hours, and everything in between. Each listing includes a direct link to Google Maps navigation so you can go straight from finding a court to getting there.

The mission

Public basketball courts are a public good. They’re free, open to everyone, and one of the few places left where you can just show up and play. We want to make them easier to find.

If you find a court that’s wrong, missing, or permanently closed, use the Report button on any court listing or send us a message. We read every report.
